San Diego's Most Transparent
Coffee Roaster

Torque Coffee was founded in 2022 by Nanelle and Andy Newbom — two coffee industry veterans with nearly 25 years of experience, including co-founding the Barista Guild of America and building Barefoot Coffee Roasters. But Torque isn't just another specialty roaster.

Torque was built around a single question: what would coffee look like if the people growing it were actually paid fairly?

The answer became Proportional Pricing — a radical, transparent model where coffee farmers receive 20% of the retail price of every bag sold. Not a fixed price. Not a floor price. A proportional share of what you actually pay.

Operating out of a historic 1930s Art Deco building on El Cajon Boulevard in City Heights, Torque is one of San Diego's most recognized specialty coffee roasters — ranked #9 Best Coffee of 2024 by Coffee Review, Top 5 on Spinn, Top 10 on Crema.co, and awarded multiple Golden Bean medals.

Torque Coffee Proportional Pricing — ethically sourced direct trade, farmers earn 20%

Radical Equity

The Most Ethical Coffee Supply Chain in San Diego

Most "ethically sourced" coffee stops at a premium over commodity price. Torque goes further.

We created Proportional Pricing — an industry-first model where every coffee producer we partner with receives 20% of the retail price of their coffee, pre-paid before the harvest is even roasted.

That means when you pay $22 for a bag of Torque coffee, $4.40 went directly to the farmer — regardless of market fluctuations, middlemen, or supply chain markups. We name every producer. We show every origin. We publish full pricing transparency.

Because ethically sourced coffee shouldn't be a marketing phrase — it should be a verifiable, auditable commitment.

How Proportional Pricing Works

Why We Roast Light —
and Why It Tastes Better

There's a misconception that darker roast means stronger coffee. At Torque, we disagree — and so does the science.

Light roast coffees preserve the natural sugars, acids, and aromatic compounds that give coffee its character. The bright, fruity, and floral notes in a well-grown Ethiopian or Colombian coffee aren't added — they're already there, waiting for a roaster who won't burn them away.

Our roasting philosophy is simple: get out of the way of the producer's art.

We roast every single origin coffee to accentuate its natural sweetness, balance its brightness, and honor the work of the farmer who grew it. The result is a cup that tastes like the place it came from — a Yirgacheffe that sings with bergamot and stone fruit, a Costa Rican that glows with honey and citrus.

If you've only ever had dark roast coffee, a Torque light roast will change everything you think you know about coffee flavor.

Common Questions About Torque Coffee

What makes Torque Coffee different from other San Diego coffee roasters?

Torque is the only San Diego coffee roaster built around Proportional Pricing — our industry-first model where farmers receive 20% of every retail dollar you spend on their coffee, pre-paid. Combined with our women-led roasting team, our 1930s Art Deco roastery in City Heights, and our obsession with light roast and single origin coffees, there's no other roaster quite like us.

What does "ethically sourced coffee" actually mean at Torque?

For us, ethically sourced coffee means full supply chain transparency and direct, proportional payments to producers — not just a "fair trade" certification or a floor price. Every producer we work with is named, every origin is disclosed, and every price reflects what they were paid.

Are your light roast coffees strong?

Light roast coffees actually contain slightly more caffeine than dark roasts — the roasting process breaks down caffeine over time. What light roast doesn't have is the bitter, charred flavor of over-roasted beans. Instead, you get the natural fruit, floral, and sweet flavors the producer worked hard to grow.

What are single origin coffees and why does Torque focus on them?

Single origin coffees come from one specific farm, cooperative, or processing station — meaning the flavor in your cup is traceable to one place and one group of people. We focus on single origin coffees because they let the producer's skill and the terroir shine.

Do you ship coffee from San Diego nationwide?

Yes. We roast in our San Diego roastery and ship fresh-roasted coffee nationwide. Subscription orders ship free. We roast to order so your coffee arrives at peak freshness — usually within days of the roast date.

What do your bright and fruity coffees taste like?

Our bright and fruity coffees typically show notes like stone fruit (peach, apricot), citrus (bergamot, lemon zest), and florals (jasmine, rose). These flavors are naturally present in high-quality single origin coffees — especially from Ethiopia, Colombia, and Costa Rica — and our light roast approach preserves them.

Every bag of Torque coffee is roasted in our City Heights roastery, sourced directly from named producers who are paid proportionally — and built to taste extraordinary. Light roasts that are bright and fruity. Single origins with full traceability. Coffee you can feel good about buying.
