Maracaturra - Juan Diego De La Cerda, Guatemala

Maracaturra is a hybrid of the giant Maragogype and the traditional Caturra varietal, and Juan Diego De La Cerda's Maracaturra from Finca El Socorro has won more top 3 Cup of Excellence awards than any other coffee from his farm. The varietal presents significant agronomic and processing challenges: it is susceptible to leaf rust and must be carefully monitored, yields remarkably low volumes, and the large seeds benefit from a slower, more gentle roast approach to evenly roast through the center. Grown at 1,850 MASL in Palencia's highland climate, this nano lot showcases the meticulous on-farm processing Juan Diego has refined since 1999, delivering complex flavors of tropical fruit, root beer, raisin bran, dates, and florals that justify its rarity and esteem.

Producer:

Juan Diego De La Cerda is the visionary force behind Finca El Socorro in Guatemala. Our relationship with Juan Diego dates back to 2008, built on shared values of quality, transparency, and innovation. At El Socorro, he continually pushes boundaries through meticulous farming, varietal exploration, and pioneering processing methods, producing award-winning coffees that redefine what Guatemalan coffee can be.

Place:

Guatemala’s coffee story is shaped by rugged volcanoes and extreme altitude. Coffee grows across eight regions—Antigua, Huehuetenango, Acatenango, Atitlán, Cobán, Fraijanes, San Marcos, and Nuevo Oriente—at 1,300–2,000+ meters. Volcanic soils, strong diurnal temperature shifts, and diverse microclimates define flavor. Harvest runs November through April, yielding structured, high-acidity coffees prized globally.

At Torque we believe in buying more coffees from fewer producers and fewer origins We go deep rather than wide. We focus our coffee sourcing to work with a smaller group of like minded coffee producers who share our vision for changing the world of coffee.

Preparation Style: Filter and Espresso

Our approach to both sourcing and roasting is that every coffee has to be good enough to stand on its own. No blenders, no base coffees, no filler. We take that same approach to roasting and preparation methods. All of our coffees are excellent in nearly every brew method from pour over to espresso.

That being said we have our preferences and so we label our coffees with Espresso, Filter or Omni as a quick way to guide you.

Subscription Type: Modernist and Espressoist

This coffee will be featured in one of these coffee subscriptions.

We aim for carbon beautiful, not just carbon neutral. Coffee farming done right stores carbon and protects forests, so we'd rather support producers who farm that way than just offset our own footprint. The full picture is on our Carbon Beautiful page.
